Alpacas came to Martha's Vineyard three years ago. They
have a herd of 54 animals and expect 20 babies next year.
Gestation period is 11 to 11.5 months. We rode our bikes
out County Road to the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven highway.
From there we went past the "blinking light" onto "Head
of the Pond Road" where the farm is located. We spent
about three hours there learning all about alpacas. It started raining very heavily while we were there. It let up long enough for us to get on our bikes and start riding for Edgartown when the skies opened up again and we got very wet, almost miserably wet. By the time we reached Edgartown we were soaked everywhere except where our disposable rain ponchos covered us up. Of course, we were soaked on our seats and up our backs where the rear bike wheels threw the water. We walked around Edgartown looking for somewhere to eat. Most of the places closed at 4:00 pm or earlier. We finally found a place and gratefully went inside where it was warmer. After dinner it was sprinkling again. We walked back to the bikes and decided to take a bus back to Oak Bluffs. The buses have a two-bike rack on the front, so we loaded the bikes on the bus and paid the dollar each for a warm comfortable ride back up the coast. The wind was really blowing when we arrived back in Oak Bluffs. It would have been a not-fun-ride had we tried to ride back. A short ride got us back to the Admiral Benbow B&B where we shed wet clothing and warmed up. Our shoes are impossibly wet and we'll have squishy feet tomorrow. |
